Sedation Dentistry

Children who are very young or who have a high level of anxiety that interferes with the cooperation necessary for the dentist to perform treatment may require some form of sedation. Sedation can also be helpful for care of special needs children. There are many safe and effective means available today that can help relax the child and promote a good environment for optimal and safe dental treatment.

Your DFC Pediatric Dentists are fully trained and licensed to administer sedation, and can keep your child relaxed and comfortable during treatment.  Our doctors are on staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital, and thus able to provide dental care under a hospital setting should the need arise.

Why do some kids benefit from sedation at the dentist?

Some children suffer from extreme anxiety surrounding dental visits and sedation will assist in providing a relaxed and comfortable experience. This in turn works to prevent the fear and anxiety from increasing. This will contribute to a long-term healthy attitude towards dental health.

Sedation dentistry is most helpful for:

  • Infants
  • Children who require major treatment
  • A very anxious child
  • Children that have had traumatic dental experiences (sound and smell aversion)
  • Children with a strong gag reflex
  • Children who are medically compromised or have special needs

There are several different levels of sedation that can be administered, depending on your child’s needs, and the amount of treatment required. Most types of sedation are known as conscious sedation, which means your child will simply feel relaxed and will not be anxious over receiving treatment.
